I remember going to look for cowslips as a child in a nearby meadow. In recent years I’ve hardly seen any.
It’s been a delight to find that the lawn of our new house is full of primroses and cowslips.
The crinkly leaves of the cowslip look very similar to those of the primrose. According to the Woodland Trust website, the leaves ‘are used in Spanish cooking and have a slightly citrusy flavour.’ The flowers apparently have been traditionally used to flavour English country wine.
I’ll leave ours to admire amongst the grass. As well as looking pretty and attracting butterflies, they give us a good excuse not to mow the lawn.
