What comes to mind if I say ‘ginger’? Biscuits? Gingerbread men (or should I say persons)? Yorkshire Parkin, if you are lucky enough to know it? Perhaps you can summon up the smell of ginger, in which case you may well be transported back to Christmas.
I’m rather fond of ginger, and usually have a knobbly root in the kitchen. It can be used in sweet and savoury dishes, and I’ve recently found it goes rather well with aubergine.
Many health benefits are made for ginger, the most well-known probably being that it is thought to be a remedy / preventative for travel sickness or other nausea.
My favourite use for ginger is to make an evening drink of ginger tea. Cut half an inch to an inch off the root, peel (the easiest way is using the back of a teaspoon), put a wide-blade knife over it and push hard (as you might for garlic) and then put in a mug and cover with boiling water. Add honey if desired. Delicious!
