My husband called me over to look at one of our little bushes. It was a mass of ladybirds! I don’t know if they had recently metamorphosised from larvae into ladybirds (or ladybugs to our American friends) or whether the bush housed lots of appetising ladybird delicacies, but it was covered with these delightful little beetles.
I’m not naturally attracted to many insects (although I know they are all God’s creatures and all have a job to do) but who could not love these shiny little splashes of bright red? Apparently the colour warns off predators and denotes a bitter taste, so is useful as well as beautiful.
Ladybirds eat greenfly, so I was especially pleased to see so many in our garden.
