Autumn has arrived. The sun is still shining and it’s not yet cold, but the leaves are turning colour and falling fast, and as well as conkers, there are acorns and their little cups on the ground.

Apparently acorns are also known as ‘oak nuts’. Chaucer referred to ‘achornes of okes’.

In addition to squirrels, Jays also hoard acorns, and are important in ‘planting’ new oak trees.
