Today’s small delight is the humble onion. Present in most kitchens and an ingredient in most savoury recipes, where would we be without it?
I have a love/ hate relationship with onions as I love the flavour they add, but don’t like the tears they can induce. I do however love peeling off the crumbly outer layer, and especially enjoy the beautiful colours under the skin of a red onion.
I left the stalk unfinished in this drawing as I was experimenting with leaving part of a drawing less detailed.
And the origin of ‘know your onions’? A Mr CT Onions, one time editor of the Oxford English Dictionary; rhyming slang ‘onion rings’ = ‘things’; or just a wacky American phrase. Take your pick.
