Today’s small delight has to be a Hot Cross Bun.
Like strawberries, these can be found in the supermarkets nowadays throughout much of the year, but I like to eat them only at Easter (and strawberries in the summer).
My buns have just currants and spice – no toffee pieces or any of the other strange additions which are on offer this year!
As we eat our buns on Good Friday we see a visual reminder of the crucifixion, and smell and taste the spices, perhaps thinking of Christ’s burial.
And in case you are wondering, the rhyme ‘One a penny, two a penny, hot cross-buns’ dates back to the 1700s.
So, one question remains… to toast or not to toast?
