Does anyone else love lampposts?
Maybe not all of the modern functional lampposts, but older, decorative ones? If you have been to Venice, you will have seen the glorious lampposts in St Mark’s Square.
This splendid lamppost is in a square in Lille, in Northern France. I was watching it from a café and it just begged to be drawn. Its principal purpose is to shed light. To be precise, to provide three sources of light. But its secondary purpose is to provide decoration. All those curlicues and lumps and bumps make it an elegant object, adding to the delight of the beautiful square.
I was drawing it fairly quickly at a small café table, and have made it a bit wobbly, but I think that adds to its charm. I hope you agree!
Do let me know if you have any favourite lampposts or cities with beautiful lampposts!
