Before trekking poles were trendy, ramblers often used walking sticks. 

These are examples of thumbsticks. The thumb sits comfortably in the natural fork of the wood.

These thumbsticks were given to us recently, a his and hers pair. I haven’t tried using mine yet, but I like to see them propped up by the door, a little bit of nature lovingly fashioned into a useful object, and a summons to go out for a walk.
