Washing-up feels less of a chore now I look out on this pretty bush of sunny yellow flowers.  I thought it was St John’s Wort, but checking now I find it isn’t, although it’s similar.  The flowers are a bit like short-trumpeted narcissi, and evoke the same feelings of happiness as the spring flowers.

According to an essay of the 1890s by Richard Le Gallienne, “one hardly realises how many important and pleasant things in life are yellow”.
