I don’t know if you feel the same, but I love wisteria-time. I look forward to lots of flowers – snowdrops – the first daffodils, bluebells – but especially wisteria. Perhaps it’s the time of year. By the time the wisteria is out, there are usually some warm and sunny days.
I love the blue/ lavender colour of the flower ‘candles’ as well as the perhaps more unusual white, and the wonderful gnarly, twisted stems. Wisteria says ‘Country cottage’ and has the same nostalgic feeling as roses round the door. And I do find I’m getting more nostalgic lately!
This lovely specimen is in the garden of Mompesson House, a National Trust property in Salisbury’s Cathedral Close. It isn’t growing against the house or over a railing, but runs along a support over a path, creating a magical scented tunnel to walk beneath.
